My thought about Episode 56: Getting Unstuck - Study Guide for College

1. Describe the difference between problem finding and problem solving.

Before we solve a problem, we need to find out what is the problem we need to solve. Solving a problem without finding the problem is a waste of time, this might end up delay the progress of the team and eventually slow down the productivity. For an example, a business man tend to improve his sales, without finding the problem of lack of sales, he invest his money on an equipment that cost him a lot. He ended up improve his supply but not his sales. The correct way to solve the problem is to find out what is the reason his sales is not as good as expected, the cause might be the the trend of customers' taste is changing, or the products need some publicize so that customers know what kind of product they are selling. Problem finding focus on find out the reason the problem occurs, and problem solving focus on come out with a solution after find out what is the cause of the problem.

2. How is prototyping like a psychological tool?

Prototyping happened when a group of people brainstorming solutions of a problem, several ideas will come out and form a prototype. Many prototypes will gather and people will discuss what is the best design that suit the customers. When choosing the prototypes, discussion and argument will happened and this will become a psychological tool for designer and engineer to understand the customer's behavior. This is an important steps to understand the user's opinion about the product and figure out what kind of change is needed to improve the product.

3. Why, according to Dave, are wicked problems particularly good for design thinking?

When the criteria of a problem change all the time, a wicked problem formed. The same solution cannot be used to solve the problem again and again because the problem will change over time. More ideas are needed to overcome the problems from time to time. Therefore, the designer need to come out with different type of prototypes and solve the unstable problem. This can help the designer to train their critical thinking skills and improve their design.

4. Define the difference between a problem and a circumstance.

Problem is a situation where cause you to face difficulty and you can solving it by working something on it. The example include the quality of the product. Circumstance is a situation where you cannot do anything about it because it is not an actionable problem. The way to reduce the impact of difficult circumstance is avoid it or work on something else to overcome the circumstance. The example included the policy of a country. A problem can be solved, but a circumstance cannot be solve because it will always be there.

5. What does Dave find when he has people write these paths down? Does he find that people are more or less satisfied with their decisions? Do you find this surprising? Why?

According to Dave, people will be more satisfied with their decisions after they identify what is the alternatives are and write their paths down. This is not surprising because when the person list out the alternatives they got, they have a clear images about what kind of paths they will go. Estimate the paths helps them to focus on a clearer goal and lead them to the path they want. In the meantime the person might lost something valuable but the outcome will be satisfying.

6. Christine says that, "with design thinking, your goal is to fail early and often." What do you think of this sentiment? Why is it important to learn from failure? What's an example you have of learning from failure?

It is easier to learn something if a person fail on his path. I agree with Christine's sentiment because this is how I learn things efficiently. If the path to the goal is free and easy, it will be very hard for a person to handle the problem if a difficultly come in and block their path. When a person fail before, he will think about what is the solution to avoid the same mistake from happen again. I had joined some events and I am still joining. The first time I become the head of department (decoration), I found that the outcome of our work did not match my expectation. I called it a failure because I found myself couldn't handle a small team of member. Therefore, I took sometime to analyzed the problems and figured out the solutions. The next time I become the head of department(editorial), I keep on remind myself to avoid the same mistake that I made. At last our department become one of the most productive department in that event, and I really thanks a lot to my team and friends that helped me during the downtime. Without the mistake I made before, I couldn't lead the team well, and might not able to become as productive as today. Every fail is a lesson, the best lesson for me to improve my problem solving and thinking skills.

7. Helen describes the work she does inside the home as art. What are some other things that you consider art but which may not always get credit as art?

Everything can be considered as an art, but from my opinion one of the most beautiful art is the art of problem solving skill. Some of the people able to analyze the problem deeply, come out with a solution that most people cannot think of. The solution can solve the problem quickly, and both sides of the team satisfy with their result. This kind of art involve communication skills, critical thinking skills, leadership spirits and many other skills. Different circumstance need different way to solve a similar problem, which make me think that problem solving skill is one of the hardest skills to learn. People might not appreciated this kind of skills but i think this make it the art that not everyone can fully understand.

8. When you think about the idea that there's more than one "right answer" when figuring out how to live your life, do you find this scary? Exciting? Both? Neither? Why?

I think this is a very interesting situation and it happen all the time. Sometime to solve a situation, people tend to forget that there are many way to solve a problem. In a team, members will come out with many ideas, most of the ideas work. The interesting situation is people might took longer time to discuss what is the best solution, rather than start to work on with the problem. The situation become more serious when a person insist to think that his or her idea is the best and force the team member to adopt his or her idea. This might ruin the team spirit and team members might not be satisfied. From my own point of view, I will listen to all the opinion, voice out my idea if I think there are something need to add in, and choose the best solution based on the circumstance that we are facing now. I will not keep on argue with other people if our way of solving a problem is different. Why should we waste time to argue which solution is worst when the truth is, all the idea we made actually work out perfectly.
