Dating apps with matchmaking algorithm - Class Presentation

One day, you feel so lonely and dry ( or maybe you are just feel like want to try this technology because why not?), therefore you download an dating apps. This dating apps use matchmaking algorithm to find you a "perfect" partner. This is the result: (Spoiler alert! Spoiler alert!)
Will you trust this result?

Before this, we need to know how dating apps with matchmaking algorithm work. In a nutshell, matching algorithm use a tons of codes and formulas to convert data input by user into vectors, and measure two closest or similar vectors.

Immediately we found the weakness: Life is not just math and formulas, life is full of possibility and can hardly described by math equation!

How about if we make copies of our self and other people in a simulation, and see if they will be together or not. The result might be much more accurate than math algorithm.

In black mirror, after user key in all the data that asked by the apps, the dating apps not just purely use math and formula to calculate the percentage of matchmaking, but simulate a thousand of real life situation. Real life situation means there is a copy of yourself and other user in a virtual world live together. If the virtual you be together with another partner in the virtual world, there are high possibility that you two might be a good partner as well in real life.

Sounds amazing!

Let us see what is the reaction of one of the pair of users in Black Mirror. (Again, spoiler alert!!!)

Back to the presentation. Connie and Hsieh Chin did a good job in this presentation. Their presentation cover many details about this technology. From their presentation, I was able to know more about how this apps work and understand how this algorithm work. They covered the advantage, disadvantage about this dating apps. They also inform us the safely precaution when using this apps. Not only that, they able to come out with real life similar example of this apps, this make the audience easier to understand about this technology.

I think that they did an excellence job when conducting the Q&A session. They are able to reply most of the questions asked by the audience. When audience asked for their opinion, both of them talked about their opinion about this topic.

One of the audience asked about if this apps will cause "introvert to become more introvert"? I think this is an interesting situation. As an introvert, I don't think I will use this apps to find my partner because I think it is very easy to fake your identity or make yourself look more prefect in internet, that's why i prefer face to face interaction with people that I am interested, at lease I know what is see is real. But myself cannot represent all the introverts. I think that dating apps is just a tool to help you take your first step to know about what people want you to know. To understand more about the person, we need to take the second step, which is start the 2 ways communication. Start from chat through internet, to real life face to face interact. It will be hard for an introvert to talk to another person face to face, but if we don't try to step out for our goal, we can hardly reach our goal.

One of the most interesting topic that discussed in Q&A is whether these kind of dating apps will be user friendly for homosexual community. I myself do not familiar with this kind of technology before, but i think this apps will bring benefit for homosexual community. This is because lesbians and gays don't usually expose them self in the community. It will be a very awkward situation if someone ask a person :" Are you gay? Can we be friend?" By using this apps, they might be able to know more lesbians and gays friends, and eventually find their true love.
